Maulana Hasrat Mohani, born in Mohan (Unnao) in 1875, was a poet, journalist and freedom fighter who coined the slogan “Inquilab Zindabad”. Alongside his political struggle he wrote some of the most tender and beloved romantic ghazals in the language.

چپکے چپکے رات دن آنسو بہانا یاد ہے
ہم کو اب تک عاشقی کا وہ زمانہ یاد ہے
chupke chupke raat din aansu bahaana yaad hai / hum ko ab tak aashiqi ka wo zamaana yaad hai
I remember shedding tears quietly, night and day — even now I recall that whole season of first love.
نہیں آتی تو یاد ان کی مہینوں تک نہیں آتی
مگر جب یاد آتے ہیں تو اکثر یاد آتے ہیں
nahin aati to yaad un ki maheenon tak nahin aati / magar jab yaad aate hain to aksar yaad aate hain
