How the Hijri calendar works
The Islamic (Hijri) calendar counts years from the Prophet ﷺ's migration (Hijrah) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. It has 12 lunar months and about 354 days — roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. That is why Islamic occasions such as Ramadan and Eid arrive about eleven days earlier each Gregorian year and gradually move through all the seasons. Four months — Muharram, Rajab, Dhul-Qadah and Dhul-Hijjah — are considered sacred.
