How petrol prices are set in Pakistan
Fuel prices are notified by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and the Finance Division, and are typically revised on the 1st and 16th of each month. The price tracks international crude and refined-product prices, the rupee–dollar exchange rate, the petroleum levy and taxes. When global oil rises or the rupee weakens, the pump price goes up; when they ease, it can fall.
Petrol vs diesel vs hi-octane
Petrol powers most cars and motorcycles. High-speed diesel fuels trucks, buses, tractors and generators, so its price feeds directly into transport and food costs. Hi-octane (HOBC) is a premium, higher-octane petrol for high-compression engines. Kerosene (SKO) is still used for cooking and heating in some areas. Diesel and petrol are the two rates that move the whole economy.
Why diesel affects the price of everything
Because trucks and farm machinery run on diesel, a diesel-price change ripples into freight charges, vegetable and grocery prices, and public-transport fares. That is why a fuel revision is closely watched even by people who do not own a car.
How to save on fuel
Keep tyres correctly inflated, service the engine and air filter, avoid harsh acceleration and idling, remove excess weight, and plan trips to combine errands. Use the calculator above to compare the monthly cost of two vehicles or two commutes before you decide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the petrol price in Pakistan today?
The latest OGRA petrol price will appear here as soon as the current notification is published. Meanwhile, use the fuel-cost calculator above with any pump price.
Is the petrol price the same in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad?
Yes. Thanks to the Inland Freight Equalisation Margin (IFEM), the notified petrol price is uniform across Pakistan — the same in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and other cities.
Who sets petrol prices in Pakistan?
Petrol prices are set by the Government of Pakistan through OGRA (the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority) and the Finance Division, based on international oil prices, the rupee–dollar exchange rate, the petroleum levy and taxes.
How often do fuel prices change?
Fuel prices are usually reviewed twice a month — around the 1st and the 16th — though the government can revise them at other times too.
What is the difference between petrol and hi-octane?
Hi-octane (HOBC) has a higher octane rating than regular petrol and is meant for high-compression or premium engines; it is priced higher. Most ordinary cars and motorcycles run fine on regular petrol.
Why does diesel affect food and transport prices?
Trucks, buses and tractors run on high-speed diesel, so a diesel-price change flows through to freight charges, grocery and vegetable prices, and fares — affecting even people who don't drive.
